• I logged in today and noticed that my traffic dropped to almost zero since yesterday.

I checked the blog and every page except the home page gave an 404-error.

I’ve noticed that on the home page there was a new post called “hello world” (like the one when you create a new wordpress installation).

There was a new user called admin with a yahoo-email address who created this post.

I’ve deleted the user and the post and all went back to normal.

    What happened.

And more importantly, what precautions should I take now (I am restored a complete WP-Folder backup now and will restore an older database copy).

    Thanks alot!
    Eddie

  • Hi there, the first thing I would do, is check your general settings page.
To find out what the New User Default Role is set as.
Just above that setting you could also uncheck the membership checkbox, anyone can register. It would be interesting to know which version of wordpress you are using.
    good luck.

There is and there was no check after “Anyone can register”, the default role is “Subscriber”.

    I’m still using 2.6.5.
