must i query the database to get the category id of a post?

Hello,

On the main page I need to know the category id of each post listed, and the posts listed are from various categories. I don’t see a postID-categoryID association anywhere in the global variables that are available in the script, so I think I have to run a database query for each post listed, but I’d like to avoid doing that if possible. Any suggestions?
