[resolved] Multisite won't work (10 posts)

I was wondering what the best way to setup WordPress for multiple sites is. I tried to do it locally on my local server Mac using MAMP with Apache. I can use WordPress as a single user just fine and tried to patch it for multi-site usage, but can't get it to work.

Do I need to re-install WP from scratch for Muiti? I mainly want to work locally on my MAMP/Apache server to build a series of test sites.

I used this tutorial to set it up:

    I get this message:
"ERROR: You cannot install a network of sites with your server address localhost:8888/ajg/wp-admin/network.php"

I'm guessing it is because you are using port 8888 in your URL.

Per the WordPress Codex, "Before You Create A Network" page:

You cannot create a network in the following cases:

"WordPress address (URL)" uses a port number other than ':80', ':443'.

Can you change the port to either 80 or 443?

"Can you change the port to either 80 or 443?"

Hi, how do I do that exactly?

I just did a google search for "mamp change port number to 80", since I use XAMPP personally. I think you might find your answer here.

There's Apache Port at 8888 and mySQL port at 8889, which one do I change to 80 or do I do both?

Doesn't work when I changed it to port 80.

Is there a problem running Mulit-site as localhost?

  8. Multisite with subdomains can be a problem. Some way you need to get a wildcard in there or if just testing, set up a few hardcoded subdomains in your hosts file.

"...set up a few hardcoded subdomains in your hosts file"

    How do I do that?

I tried to get it to work by changing but get following error message:

"Multisite only works without the port number in the URL."

...when I use any number apparently.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
