   So I just installed WordPress Multisite with sub-directories. The original site works fine http://www.hypesite.com but the second site http://www.hypesite.com/diaries does not display anything except my hosting service's logo as if there was no site there. But if I go directly to a post on that second site like http://hypesite.com/diaries/2010/12/10/hello-world/
   then that displays fine. Please help

   htaccess file issues. :)

   But I edited the htaccess file following the instructions during install. Do i need to update the .htaccess file that is generated in the second site's files as well?

   there *is no* second htaccess file.

   You can put one there and edit it all you like - if you're server's not reading it, it can cause all kinds of fun stuff.

   Did you make a physical /diaries/ folder on the server? If you did, REMOVE IT. The blogs are virtual, they do not exist on the server itself.

   Ah perfect. That worked. Another unrelated question: How do I make the second site hypesite.com/diaries private i.e. users must login to view content on that site but can still view content on the main site without logging in
