My client needs several sites. Should I setup a multisite network or set up the sites as subdomains? We will be using the original installation of WordPress to create either a multisite network or subdomains. Thank you very much.

When you setup a multisite network you have two options:
    1) sub-domains
    2) sub-directory

You have to ask yourself what type of site urls do you want?
    sub-domains: site1.domain.com, site2.domain.com, site3.domain.com
    sub-dir: http://www.domain.com/site1, http://www.domain.com/site2, http://www.domain.com/site3

Hope that answers your question. If not you can read the docs -

  3. Option 3 is 'Mapped domains' :)

Is it necessary to setup a multisite network if you have more than one subdomain? Thanks.

No. One WP multisite network can support multiple (sub)domains. But if you use ssl, there can be complications setting up certificates for each domain.

If you use the WP Domain Mapping plugin, you can configure WP sub-domain and/or WP sub-directory to serve multiple sub-domains.
