Multisite install, subsites not working v3.5. Help please.

Hello,
I’ve been through all the posts I can find and tried all the suggestions re changes to .htaccess and wp-config; I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the whole wordpress and multisite and still I can’t get the subsite working properly. The main site works fine. I am hosted by 1&1.
WP is installed into root directory, I can edit and change .htaccess, etc.

My .htaccess reads like this currently
