When multisite is enabled ever visitor is redirected to a sign up page or to registration has been disabled depending on my settings.
Why is this?

It would be helpful if you could tell us a bit more about your system, and confirm that you've been able to follow all the instructions without encountering any difficulties. In particular: Are you using subdomains, or subdirectories for your blogs? What does the domain that points to your site look like? (domain.com?)

It's doing that becasue it can't find the blog in the database. Did you (perchance) mess with the www/non on your main blog?
