• I’m just trying to get my head around WordPress MultiSite and I’m wondering if it’s possible to set up several “clusters” on the same hosting account? For instance, if I have “www.mysite.com” as my main hosting account, and I then set up multiple addon domains (as opposed to subdomains) on that account, can I install MultiSites within each of those new domains at all?

For example, my hosting account is “www.mysite.com”.

    I set up three addon domains – “www.mysite2.com”, “www.mysite3.com” and “www.mysite3.com”.

Can I then set up MultiSite installs within each of those addon domains for a particular genre, or must I have one huge MultiSite on the main account domain with all sites stacked on it?

The reason I ask is because I’m having difficulty setting up new subdomain sites at the moment. I got everything working the other day with a MultiSite installed at the root domain on another account I have, but I’m trying to do things differently on this account. So far no such luck though.

I haven’t got to the domain mapping stage on this server I should add. Just a straight MultiSite install. Domain mapping worked fine on the other server.

Another question is for Andrea_r. Do you have a list of features for your professional domain mapping plugin? I’m trying to weigh it up against the free plugin but I don’t know what the features of the paid one are.

In the past I’ve set up my WordPress installs with a separate “images” folder for each addon domain (I just hated the way WordPress handled images so I did my own thing). I realize that the subdomains in a MultiSite are virtual and that there are no folders as such, but am I able to somehow “domain map” the images with your plugin if I park them on another domain altogether?

Anyway, I hope someone can help out with my questions.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-multi-network/ may be what you’re looking for with regards to clusters.

Do you have a list of features for your professional domain mapping plugin?

All the info is here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/ 🙂

    And the pro one: http://wpebooks.com/professional-domain-mapping/

You can compare the two at your leisure.

    No, you;re not obligated to.

On shared hosts that have wilcard subdomains, the wildcard only works on the main account. Not on add-on domains.

    There’s two differences:

    – the paid one hides the originating domain. It does not exist in the html source of the mapped domain.
    – the super admin maps all domains. there’s no menu on sub sites for users to map them on their own.

And yes, that’s on the sales page. 😉

Otherwise, they are the same. Server-side, all domain mapping plugins need the same setup work done. The plugins only handle the domains when they get to wordress.
