Support » Fixing WordPress » Multiple Page categories – how?

  • HI

    Just getting used to WordPress 2.6 – so far its great, even if a tad comfusing.

    Anyway, I want to create some static pages – which is fine. BUT at the moment I can only seem to create 1 static page category. All the static pages just go under this one option. I need to create a couple.
    Under wignets, I cannot add “pages” any more.

    Any ideas?

    Scott

  • Pages don’t have categories. Read the Docs.

    Do you know if there are any future plans to incorporate a category-like functionality to pages in WordPress? For CMS purposes if pages could be assigned to one or multiple “collections” or “portals” then it would be easier to design a template where a particular page could be viewed through one or more “collection/portal” template pages.
    Do you know of a plugin that does this?
    Thanks!

    Pages can be subpages of other pages, and so you can arrange them hierarchically that way but no, they cannot be in categories. Nor is there any plans to do that. You’re trying to use the wrong thing for your purpose.

    Pages are supposed to be static entities. They live in one place, at one URL. They don’t show their content in several places.

    Posts are not, their content can be on several places, sorted in several ways.

    Pages = static.
    Posts = dynamic.

    Thanks for responding so quickly Otto! Here is what I am wanting to do.
    I am designing a CMS site with several sections where each section will have its own look and feel and some section-specific content (held in pages). However, some content will be common between the various sections. I would like to be able to be able to have each section maintain its distinct look and feel and yet be able to draw from the common content. If I design any kind of a page template for the pages that have this common content then that is what will be retained no matter which section it is viewed from and that is what I want to avoid.
    Am I asking for the impossible? 🙂

    Why do you want them to be “Pages”?

    WordPress has a vast templating system, you can make Category Templates have their own look and feel as well.

    Read up here first: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy

    And then realize that you should make a thing what it is first, and then make the template accommodate the look you want. If some content is going to be shown in multiple places (and I don’t mean like in a sidebar or some such simple thing), then it’s a Post, not a Page.

    Once again, thanks Otto! I guess I will have to wrap my brain around this some more. I appreciate your input.
    All the best!
