I've used this method here for WP 2.9:

However I'm wondering how that would work with 3.0.1. Would it create conflicts or are there any other recommended methods for implementing multiple thumbnails for posts and pages?

can't do multiple thumbnail images....at least using that method.
You register thumbnail support, and that allows you to have 1 featured/thumbnail image per page/post
You can use multiple sizes of the same image with add_image_size, but can only assign 1 thumbnail per
there are other ways to do thumbnails so you can have more than one.... google would be more help on that..... using custom fields, or scripts that create thumbnails from images you've attached to the post
