I am trying to run WordPress off OpenWRT on a router. I have MSMTP installed and forwarding to my google account. Sendmail and the PHP mail() function both work, but WordPress still says I cannot send email and it may be disabled. I did some digging on this topic and a lot of people say that once they created a wordpress@theirdomain.com account it worked. Since I am running MSMTP I don't have, nor can I create, accounts.
My biggest problem is I cannot get logged into WordPress at all. Every time I installed it I would get random 502 errors. It would install but not create my admin account. I found a workaround that said just manually add the account in MySQL and then have WordPress send you a new password. Hence my problem. No email means no new password, which means no admin account.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the essay!

you can set email by other means than email

if you use msmtp just for wordpress you can avoid MTA and using php mail()

this plugin can help using external SMTP server (or there are other plugins for this)

are you sure your router can take running wordpress?

*face palm* I wasn't even thinking the passwords were just md5! I haven't played with the plugin yet, but at least I was able to insert a password so I have admin access now!
Honesty, I don't know if the router supports WordPress, it's running uHTTP and PHP, but WordPress is horribly slow (maybe the 502s were it timing out). This is sort of a test to see if it is possible.

502's is most likely due to insufficient memory.
how much RAM do you have on your device? what other services do you run here (mysql?)? what are you using for web server and php sapi?

if you have less than 128 mb RAM on your router there is no worth running wordpress on it, even with very rare visitors, its possible to run with less (but still >= 64) but its only to run.. It will be slow to unusable state.

honestly speaking, you better run other cms, something lite, with sqlite or files database backend

    I'm using uHTTPD and PHP5
The router only has 8MB of RAM, so that very well could be the problem!
The main reason I wanted to run WordPress is I want to execute shell commands remotely. I found a WordPress script that allows that, and IFTTT supports text posting to WordPress.

use ssh, or install any webshell script if you really want to risk security via running shell commands via web

8 MB and WordPress... well .. You understand, infinite 502's :)
