    I am getting ready to move my wp.com to .org. I am concerned about the move in the sense. How should I orchestrate it? Here is what I have;

My domain http://FocusonFrederick.com is with godaddy. I have it set up for my wp.com blog.

I have a bluehost account that I purchased with a new domain. I have created a public folder for the my wp.com blog to be imported to, but it asks for a domain to associate it with...can I do this first or do I have to move domain over first?

How do I get from point A (current wp.com blog) to point B (wp.org blog with my old domain on Bluehost)?

I know the blog will be actually hosted in both places. Do I need to detatch my old domain until I transfer it to bluehost? Pictures will be linked and the sidebar will need to be set up again.

How long do you think I will be down until the domain transfers?

    Your expertise is greatly appreciated

There is no 'move' from wordpress.COM to your own hosted domain.

Use the Manage Export from wordpress.COM.

Use the Manage Import at your new domain.

I think he is referring to the domain itself more than the content. You just need to get godaddy to change the name servers to ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com so that the domain goes to your new server.

It might be easier to setup your blog on a subdomain of your existing domain on bluehost, import the content from wordpress.com and then change the settings to have the old domain. Little more work, but seamless for your readers.

Nothing else needed to do on wordpress.com. I wouldn't delete you blog, just create an entry saying the new domain and leave the blog URL as your current domain to forward traffic until it expires over there.

Yes, the move is only my domain. I understand the import/export functions.

I want to continue using my old domain, just on bluehost.

Thanks Trent...I think I understand what your are saying.

Create a subdomain on my new bluehost. Move my servers names on godaddy to bluehost and then make the changes to the old domain.

Thank you for your help... this is resovled.
Here is what I ended up doing:

  6. Changed Nameservers on my godaddy.
  7. Created Addon Domain on Bluehost
  8. Installed wordpress.org using Fantastico
  9. Exported my blog off wp.com
  10. Imported it on the new location
  11. All changes took effect in about 2 hours
