moving wp-includes file to theme??? can it be done ?

    Hi i there i am interested in modifying how post images are placed within a post and am of the understanding that wp-includes files should not be modified as when you update your version of wordpress these files are overwritten is this correct ??

    i think the file i need to modify is media.php (also is this the correct file to modify?) am i able to move this file to within the theme dir so it will not be overwritten ? or can i just edit it in the includes folder
