We currently have two separate installs of WordPress. One at http://www.theattachedfamily.org and another at http://www.theattachedfamily.org/membersonly

We currently opened up access to the public for the membersonly section and we would like to have this area come up at the http://www.attachedfamily.org address. We are not concerned with preserving any data from the current WordPress site at this address.

I have read through this article: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress
Do I need to follow the steps in the section: When Your Domain Name or URLs Change

Or can I use these steps: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

If I use the second set of steps, will the URLs still show /membersonly?

    Thanks!
    Naomi

  2. Or can I use these steps: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

    Yes, I'd suggest Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory.

If I use the second set of steps, will the URLs still show /membersonly?

No, not with that setup. Using those steps allows you to leave your files in the /membersonly directory but outwardly display them as if you were on the root domain.

Awesome! And just to be extra sure - this applies to all of the current pages and posts as well not just future posts, correct?

How about any links that exist out in the world for a specific page with /membersonly in the URL? Will they be broken or redirected?

  4. WordPress will handle it. The cool part, really, is that the links still "technically" contain /membersonly but WordPress rewrites them as coming from the main domain. So in essence, there aren't really redirects, WordPress is just rewriting the URLs at the last moment. Pretty neat.

One more question - what about the users? Will the users be pulled from the Membersonly install or the root install?

I think this is my last question. ;)

  8. The users from whichever site you're "moving" to a sub-directory will come with it. So the users you currently have with the membersonly site will stay with it, as will all the content, etc.
