    Greetings

I’m palying with WP multi site

in WP single install you can move the uploads directory in another place than wp-content/uploads

for example I like to have it at the root, on a uploads directory right in my public_html

what are the pros and cons to do so in a multi-site environement?

thank you in adavance for your tips

pro: It’s where you want it.

con: It’s a pain to set up, it may break with other plugins.

There really isn’t a need for it in MultiSite, since on the FIRST blog is in wp-content/uploads anyway (the rest are in wp-content/blogs.dir/#/files) and even THEN the front facing URL is domain.com/files/2011/04/image.jpg which looks nice 🙂

Thank you for your fast answer Ipstenu, so no real need.

in between I switched to multi site mode, and it looks like that I can’t find in the m/wp-admin/options-media.php a way to return to the normal wp-content/uploads

is that normal? or did I already manage to skrew something up?

    Thank you again

That’s normal. Because it’s too easy to shoot your foot off messing with it, it’s now a HIDDEN super admin only option. (wp-admin -> Network -> Sites -> Edit Site – it’s under Options)

Makes sense. Individual blog runners may not have the access to make the new folders.

    you are a love Ipstenu..

so I have reset it to wp-content/uploads on the wp-admin -> Network -> Sites -> Edit Site – Options

Thank you again for your advises

If you changed it BEFORE you switched to MultiSite you should be okay.

Well Before I switched to multisite I changed it to root/uploads, then after switching to multisite I have reset it to wp-content/uploads on the wp-admin -> Network -> Sites -> Edit Site – Options (changing the content of the field and then update)

    is that ok?

Should be. Upload an image to double check, of course 😀

ETA: Note that your SUB sites (i.e. not the main one) will use /wp-content/blogs.dir/#/files for their files – Dont be scared, it’s okay)

ok on the main site it works, it well uploads to wp-content/uploads

what directory right permission would you recommand for uploads and blogs.dir ?

also I’m at the domaine name mapping process

I have hard time to understand when you create a new mapping, it asks if it is primary or not? what does that mean to be primary? is that my mother of the hub (the domaine where is installed wp)

    Thank you in advznce

Make a new topic for domain mapping please 😉

Folder permissions on uploads and blogs.dir should be 755 or 777, depends on your host. If 755 doesn’t work, do 777.
