[resolved] Moving to new server and now getting a 500 internal error (9 posts)

    Where do I need to look to fix this problem? I am unable to login to the admin on the old site and I am unable to see the blog on the new site.
    Here's what I did:
    1. backup of database using the instructions here:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database

    2. Copied all files for the blog and moved them to the new server.
    3. imported all files to the new database using the same login info shown in the wp-config file.
    4. Seen the 500 internal server error at my temporary link (link used while switching servers) ie: http://xxx.xxxx.com/~username/blog

    5. Read in these instructions http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress
    to activate, to login to the blog and change the url for the blog. Did that by changing to http://xxx.xxxx.com/~username/blog and instantly got a 500 internal server error there.

    6. Read in these instructions to
    Edit wp-config.php
    It should be possible to fix the site URL using a new feature -

    Add these two lines to your wp-config.php, where "example.com" is the NEW location of your site.

    define('WP_HOME','http://example.com');
    define('WP_SITEURL','http://example.com');
    That should be it. If it worked, stop reading this page now.

    Did that, and still getting the 500 internal server error.
    Changed it back to the old link, and still no luck.

    Where do I go now?

  2. A 500 is likely not to be anything to do with WordPress

    http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E500.html

    I would delete the WP folder and see it just http://xxx.xxxx.com/~username/ works. If THAT error 500s, talk to your server host. If not, put in a simple PHP script as an index.php:

    <?php echo "Hello World!"; ?>

    Make sure that works. Basically, you're going to have to see what's up with the server :/

    OK, I did as you said and I see Hello World. The rest of the site is working properly as tested.
    Temp url til site moved:
    http://black.countingsheepwebdesigns.com/~itsallab/
    http://black.countingsheepwebdesigns.com/~itsallab/blog

    Old site url: http://www.itsallaboutthecards.com/blog/

    brings up :
    404 Not Found
    The server can not find the requested page:

    black.countingsheepwebdesigns.com/blog/

    I feel if I am able to get into the wp admin and change the links that I changed, I Will at least be able to get her blog showing on the old site at least til I get the issue fixed with the new site? but it wont let me in the admin since I changed the links. Which page in the code edits that?

  5. Just to make sure, you're past the 500. If not, please let me know.

    Moved WP. Check http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

    Basically you moved the folder before updating the links. You can either move the folder back and do it the right way (see http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress ) or you can 'fix it' with the directions from the first URL :)

    Im sorry, Im confused. I did as you instructed, (at least I think I did... basically I renamed index.php to index2.php and added the code for hello world to the index.php file) I didnt actually move the files from the /blog/ folder to the public_html folder. For index2.php I still get the 500 error. I am unable to access the wp-admin from the old blog due to the 404 error? I feel like I am totally lost in left field somewhere?

    Ok, I see that you said to delete the folder which I am assuming you mean to move the blog to the public_html folder instead of its own directory. I cant do that because there is already an index.php file in use in the public_html folder.

    UPDATE: I had the wrong info in the config file for the new database. So, the new URL is now working..if I go in and change the link on the OLD site to the new url where it will be soon, I think I will be ok right?
