• Right now we have a static html website and a wp blog under /blog, and we want to just use wp as the whole website now.

How do I keep my old urls that say website.com/blog/entry-name if I want to move wordpress from /blog to the root directory?

Also, I don’t have access to my database and would have to go through my sysadmin to make changes to it. Sometimes he’s busy and I don’t want to wait. Wouldn’t I be able to move wordpress from /blog to the root by just deleting wordpress, reinstalling it at the root, and then importing my entries?

Yes, I don’t understand it, that’s why I posted in the support forum.

I don’t think anyone here is going to walk you thru it step by step.

You need access to the db. Your entries are in the database. You can’t import entries to the WordPress directory. You would be adding them to the database which by the way is where all of the urls are.

I would wait for the sysadmin. I think he might be really upset if you got into the db.

I think I see a way to keep my blog entries showing up at blog/entry-name using /blog/wp-admin/options-permalink.php under the optional base categories field.

If someone can just answer my second question that would be great. Do I need to mess around with my database? Can I just delete my current wordpress files and install the latest version in the root directory?

I’m not asking for a step by step, I’m asking a specific question.

Also you can export and import entries through wordpress under the tools menu so I don’t understand what you’re saying there.

Do I need to mess around with my database?

If you want to retain your current content, yes.

Can I just delete my current wordpress files and install the latest version in the root directory?

Yes – if you want to trash all of your current content.

Why, is it not possible to export my posts through the tools menu and then import them again later?

Yes – you can do that if you import them into a completely fresh database in a fresh install.

Thank you Esmi. If I don’t care about my current content will I run into problems just deleting my current wordpress files from the /blog directory and reinstalling wordpress in the root directory without doing anything to the database?

Why would I need a fresh database to import the old entries? I am getting the feeling that this support community caters to a more educated user but I would be very thankful for any guidance you can provide. Thank you for your help.

You cannot re-install WordPress into the same database tables first dropping those tables from the database. So… yes.

Why would I need a fresh database to import the old entries?

    1. Your old database would no longer run your site effectively as it would have moved. As I said previously, the database stores more than just your text content.
    2. You would duplicate every single post & image. Exporting posts does not delete them from the database.
    3. Older images would be broken due to the site move.

I know about the image links, it’s just anything database related that is confusing me. Hmm, okay. Thank you for the help! I wish the instructions were written more clearly for beginners, but I get the feeling that this is not really a place for beginners.

Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me anyway!
