• Hello πŸ™‚
I’ve recently switched from MT to WP and, due to a lack of thought, I wish to move my install so that instead of being located at /blog, it will just be at /. How difficult is this to do? What needs to be done?

  • I did my transfer this way:
    a. Copied all the files to the root
    b. Logged in the backend from the old position, change the URIs at all the places in the backend where I find them. There were 3 places in 0.72 not sure how many in 1.0
    c. Test for some time and later remove the old files!
Disclaimer: Mine transfer was successful. I would not take any gurantees. πŸ˜€

I’ve done this several times… moved back and forth between different directories. The only settings you need to change (that I can remember changing) are:

    1. smilies_directory in General Blog Settings
    2. siteurl in Base Settings
    3. link images in link manager possibly? I never use these so I’m not sure… they appear to be relative paths in the default settings

I would update the Wiki page, but I have yet to figure out how Wiki works… hehehehe… don’t want to screw up the page. πŸ™‚

    antifuse,
The Wiki is fairly easy to do…I just looked at what everyone else was doing and copied it! Basically you navigate to the appropriate page, and once there, hit the /EDIT button on the bottom, and scroll to the place where you want to enter the stuff, and type away. You can preview it as many times as you like before committing the changes. Also, if it is “screwed up” in some way, it’s really easy to revert the page back to it’s previous state. The Wiki is designed to take a snapshot of the page every time it is edited in some way, regardless of the amount of editing that was done.
Really, you can’t break anything. Our rule of thumb is to ADD information, and if it is a significant change from what is already there, just put in the new information, date it, and if necessary, explain the changes from previous posts. Don’t delete anything.
Just go for it! You won’t break it! When you edit a page, you’ll see the special characters and format of previous posts, so just follow along.
    Craig.

Ok, I updated the Wiki page… Now the only thing I can’t figure out is how to create a username on there, not that it really matters πŸ˜›

    Anti,
Check out Item 7 to set up a username. It’s easy enough that even I was able to figure it out.
Thanks for participating and helping out!
    Craig.

Does anyone know if either Sushubh’s or antifuse’s method will work for WordPress 1.5?

Thank you, macmanx. Before finding your reply, I discovered this thread:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=19566

which sent me to this page:

    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

After moving my files, I followed the advice on changing the site url, only I changed everything that had the wrong path to the correct one. In my case, I found three items: siteurl, fileupload_realpath, and home. I imagine it will vary depending on what plugins are installed, etc. The gentleman who runs tamba2 has a lot of clearly written, useful information on WordPress. I highly recommend his site to all WordPress newbies.
