Yes, i accidentally moved my files to the root directory without changing the URL first. Then i moved them back to their original path to rectify my mistake and now my admin panel returns 404's on all requests.
I read about symlinks but i dont fully understand the process. Can someone be of good advice? thank you.

For content changes there are plugins to do a global search and replace to update URI's (think about your attachments!)
Look at this too...
Did you make the changes in your wp-config.php file?
Is this a new blog with no content?

Its a fully developped site with a decent amount of content ... I cant even access the admin anymore, i just get a 404.
Its not really about content changes I just wanted to move the site to a new url. I havn't thouched the wp-config.php file because everything is back in its original position.
I should obviously have followed the instructions on "Moving WordPress Within Your Site" ... Bit late now.
The article talks about symlinks - do you think it could be a solution?
