    Hi,

Iam sorry but this wp help site does not provide a solution for me.

It says: If you are changing to a new server but same domain, all you need to do is edit wp-config.php with your new database/user information and upload everything as it is to your new server.

situation: I will move WP blog from HG to GD. Tha domain will stay the same, provided by GD.

Ok, please help me with few questions, as I am a real fresher.

    1) do I need to instal WP on my new server? Or uploading database is enough?

    2) I made a general full backup from HG. Is that ok? Or do I need to make some partial backup? like mysql base?

    3) Where exactly should I upload the database at GD? Do I need to make a new one or new folder?

    4) I thought maybe I should install new WP account on my new server at GD and than make changes in wp-confih.php. change data base name, data base username and data base password and database host to old ones from HG. But I guess this is not enough to move a blog with content?

    Thank you in advance,
    be good

you need the files and the database on the new server. If the domain is pointing at the new server, the new site should work if you:

    • copy the files over
    • create a new database & restore the database backup
    • change the database connection details in wp-config.php

I made full backup - and I dont know if this contains files and database?

The backup is now on my computer. I am making a new wp at my new host. If I make a new directory does this play any role?

I have my blog on xyz.com and I want to stay the same.

Domain is still pointed to old server - is it problematic if I make new wp with same domain? Where to Install? It says:
User your root domain if you haven't installed anything previously.
If you have an existing application installed it's best to choose a new directory.

so i should make a new directory? Does that mean my blog will be availiable actually at the same domain + directory name?

If you don't know what is being backed up, I would hazard a guess that you only have either the files or the database, not both. It is important to have both. You can backup the database with an export from a database management tool such as phpMyAdmin. You can backup the files by copying them using a desktop ftp app such as filezilla.

You need to change the DNS to point to the new server. The company you registered your domain with should be able to help with that.

Your web host should be able to advise of which directory you need to copy your files into and how to restore the database.
