Wouldn't it be more correct to have the Update Services option reside in the Privacy settings area?
It isn't intuitively obvious that the option "Settings -> Writing -> Update Services" would be turned on/off by the options in "Settings -> Privacy" to allow/disallow web crawlers to index the site.
This bit me because I hadn't submitted or linked an under-construction WordPress site to anything that would lead to its discovery during the construction phase, yet it was discovered. It had seemed safe to preconfigure the web crawler option to "allow" because the site wouldn't have been discovered on its own. That assumption was wrong because of the side-effect of turning the Update Services on.
I understand I made a rookie mistake, and I'm not objecting to the coupling of these two settings. Rather, I think the settings ought to be together for intuitiveness and absolute clarity.
