Move to Subdomain and single login (5 posts)

I installed WP using subdirectories but Google's new world seems to be pushing subdomains for my application. I have 2 questions:

    (1) I've seen a couple of "simple" ways to convert an install of a subdomain to a subdirectory. Do any of these actually work? I'm wondering whether a simpler way might be exporting the contents of a blog into a file and then reimporting them into the new blog in the subdomain.

    (2) Is there a way to have a unified login so that if you register for one "blog" you are entered into all the other blogs? I don't need separate logins for each blog/subdomain.

    Thanks to all for responses.

  2. Google doesn't actually care, they're just leveling the playing field between subfolder and subdomain.

    Answeing out of order:

    (2) Yes - It's called WordPress MultiSite :) I would, in your case, turn it on for Subdomains on your MAIN blog (the one installed in the root of your webspace - domain.com) - Then create sub-sites for your current subfolder blogs, and export/import the data. Then remove the subfolders, and put in an .htaccess redirect to send people to the right place.

    (1) would be as simple as changing the URLs and then, in cpanel, making subdomains.

LOL... thanks. I'll answer out of order too. Google actually does seem to care now but I won't get into it. :)

I'm confused with your reply since I was getting the impression that it isn't as simple as just turning things on and off. OK - you have to turn on subdomains on the main blog which means only the one in the root will work but not the others. Those will be moved. As far as the subsites go, why would I want to recreate all those blogs individually? It sounds like you're suggesting running multiple copies of WP, one in each subdomain.

Perhaps I've not been clear and it appears that it is the case. I have a single install in the root that uses subdirectories. I want it to use subdomains and move the blogs there.

Does this still work? It's 2 years ago and I've seen a few other attemtps.

  4. Ah. You're already using MutliSite. You gotta say that, man, we can't know what you don't say ;) If you post outside the MultiSite subforum, the assumption is you're not using it.

    Okay, then.

    From that URL do this:

STEP 1: BACKUP YOUR DATABASE AND CONFIG FILE (as he describes)

STEP 2: CHANGE EACH BLOG'S URL (ditto)

    STEP 3: UPDATE WP-CONFIG.PHP
    Do http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network#Switching_between_subdomains_and_subfolders instead

    STEP 4: UPDATE HTTPD.CONF
    Do http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network#Step_2:_Setting_Wildcard_Subdomains instead

OPTIONAL STEP 5: REDIRECT FROM OLD SUBDOMAIN TO NEW SUBFOLDER

Do it the other way :)

Hehe. ;) Many thanks. I'll let you know how it works out. This is a big move and sometimes the codex instructions can be confusing, although they are usually excellent and far better documented than most other software.
