Move Core Blog To Sub Blog (10 posts)

    Hi

I took one of my single wordpress installs and made it a multisite. Now I want to move my core blog to a sub blog.

    1) I suppose I can do an import export and then delete the posts on the core blog. This should be an easy solution but I am not sure how effective and what the consequences will be. For example, internal urls will not change and I can use a plugin that can correct that, but there may be other consequences or
    2) I can ask the experts for another solution. ;-)

  2. If you export/import, you can edit your exported file on the desktop before re-uploading to handle internal URL changes.

The real issue would be people looking for the old URLs. Though that can be tripped with .htaccess some, you'd have to be careful since you're moving and replacing.

Why do you want to move the blog?

    @ipstenu

    Thanks for the ideas.

BTW: There's a plugin that can change all internal urls.

Why do I want to move the blog?

I want to use the domain name as gateway to many blogs and the current blog under the domain name is only one of the issues we cover.

  4. I'm sure there are a lot of plugins to change internal URLs ;)

I wonder if you might want to make a new site as your 'dashboard' blog instead. But that wouldn't really help with the moving of the blog to a new subfolder/domain, and I'm guessing you want that too.

Yes, the major issue is to find a way to disassociate the content with the domain name.

  6. The only real problem with exporting and moving is that your OLD links, that is people coming to your site via the old links, will need someway to be told where the new ones are, and in such a way as it doesn't break new links.

Usually that's fairly easily done via .htaccess trickery. Just have to be careful and pay close attention to what you have now and what you want to have, and what else you will have that might conflict.

Just now realised that I can move the content to a sub blog but I have membership site that makes it complicated. I will have to remove the domain and replace it with another.

@ipstenu I am now reading this to find a solution http://wordpress.org/support/topic/changing-the-domain-name-of-a-wp-multisite-installation?replies=7

EDIT: I am not sure if the above is applicable?

  9. I'm not sure.... When you said this:

I will have to remove the domain and replace it with another.

Did you mean 'I will have to move the install to a new folder'? Or are we really talking moving to a new domain name (like from olddomain.com to newdomain.com)?

It's not quite the same as moving a blog to a sub-site (sub blog) though it's very similar.

@ipstenu let me try and explain with an example. I have a domain called foundation.xyz I have a magazine/newsletter under that domain. I have changed foundation.xyz to a multi site.

I want to move the content of the magazine to mag.foundation.xyz. This is can do with export import but the magazine uses a membership plugin making it difficult to move the mag to mag.foundation.xyz.

The easier alternative would be to exchange the domain name foundation.xyz with foundationmag.xyz and foundation.xyz becomes the core blog. I can then use the domain foundation.xyz on a sub blog.

After all this chatter ;-) I feel that I have to change the core blog's domain name.
