So ..., a guy promised to design a new website for the church. And then for 3 years he didn't deliver and didn't show anyone the design. And finally he showed the design to the Pastor and the Pastor didn't like it. So he walked off in a huff. But he sent me a zip of the files and the .sql export file.

The site was wordpress based. I'm trying to modify it to put it to use.

Unfortunately I'm not much of a wordpress guru. I can push html around a little but I'm having a hard time grasping how wordpress works. Still, I am making some progress. Lots of information on the web, though sometimes hard to understand.

Main problem was changing the site addresses so I could host it on my site without buying a new domain. I struggled with phpMyadmin but finally discovered it was easier to use a text editor to edit the .sql file as well as the site content files which had hard coded addresses. I finally seem to have that worked out. Actually, I think I have most of the issues worked out and it seems to run. http://thewright.info/effortchurch

Except that when I try to activate the plugins that came along with it, I get an 'error 500, internal server error'. For a while I had to go thru phpMyadmin to deactivate them all to regain a running site but I've discovered I can do a browser 'back' and deactivate the plugin if I do it immediately.

There were 26 plugins that came along with the site. Some don't seem necessary ('Hello Dolly') but others seem like a good idea ('Akismet'). So far, I have only been able to activated three (Featured Content Gallery, ICS Calendar, and WP-Mail-SMTP. Apture, Akismet, WP-DBmanager, Sermon Browser, Google Doc Embedder, etc, all cause the error 500. The error 500 does not show up on the plugin management page but as soon as I switch to a different section of the Dashboard, it appears. Also, the configuration page of Akismet indicates all is well with it, not withstanding the fact that the site doesn't work. Deactivating the offending plugin restores the site to operation.

Actually, the site works fine even when the Error 500 is showing up. It is the internal dashboard operations that do not work, including logging in.

I downloaded a new copy of Akismet and installed it and nothing changed.

Does any of this tell someone what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you. I should have looked for this info before I started this project. Would have made it simpler. Still, I don't find anything that refers to my problem with the plugins. Indeed, it seems to imply that moving the plugins should just work.

My guess is that all of your urls & paths in the local install are incorrect. If you're trying to copy/replicate a live site on a local install, you may want to review Moving_WordPress.

Ah, I'm sorry. There is a misunderstanding. IN actuality I did try some local installs on my netbook in a Kubuntu partition, with varying degrees of unsuccess, but the install in question is on a server. 1and1.com is the host. I had previously just used it as a private website and installed WP in a subfolder.

Moving_WordPress is still applicable if you're trying to replicate an existing site.

Yes, I found useful information there. But not anything that seemed to apply to my plugin problem. I will search again for addresses that point wrongly but haven't found them yet. Could be something calculated by a WP function, I suppose. I'll probably never find that.
