Most efficient way to include installation files for plugin?

    I’m familiar with using register_activation_hook(...) to do necessary installer functions, but I want to keep things efficient.

    What is the best practice to basically only include the necessary installation files if the installation is running?

    I want to avoid putting unecessary overhead into wordpress.
