• This seems almost trivial, yet for some reason I haven’t been able to find the answer to this question anywhere, even thought some people have asked this before but never got an answer. I hope this isn’t going to be the case here.

Anyway, as the title of my post suggests, I’d like to know how you can add the option to change the interface language in your own hosted WordPress blog, just like you can in the free hosted blog @wordpress.com ?

Moreover, why doesn’t the blog come with this feature built in? In other words why are there differences between the version on WordPress.com and WordPress.org? And secondly, how do I modify my installation to include this option? Is there some kind of plugin I need for it?

    Thanks in advance!

Doesn’t any one have an answer to this very basic question? Why are there features in WordPress.com which are not implemented in WordPress.org ?! Isn’t it supposed to be the same software??

I consulted the documentation prior to asking this question. The only thing the documentation tells you is that you can download a translated installation of wordpress, or you can install a language pack, which will fully transform your current installation into the language of your choice. However, I found no reference to how you can control the blog language and the interface language separately, just like in WordPress.com

My apologies for providing redundant information. I did not consider the details not in evidence at the time.

I believe wordpress.com uses WordPress MU. I have no personal experience with the MU variant, but its characteristics and features do indeed appear to be different from the “single install” version of WordPress. Perhaps the option to use different admin/blog languages is one of them. Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the information Clayton! I had no knowledge of WordPress MU, so this at least gives me some idea as to why there’s a difference between the two versions.

However I still need someone to point me in the exact direction with regard to changing the interface language/blog language separately. If there’s a specific plugin for that I would like to know where I can get it please!

Also I find it incredible that the official WordPress forum is so unhelpful. Just one person took the time to answer me, and no one from the official support staff is anywhere to be seen… this is such a basic question too!

…and no one from the official support staff is anywhere to be seen

Actually, there are a lot of incredibly technically skilled and creative individuals that help out here regularly, and it seems that in most cases everyone tries to lend a hand sooner or later. If I’m not mistaken, I think the “official” support is all volunteer, by the way.

Your request is an interesting one. I did quite a bit of searching on the subject before my last reply, and I found a lot of people with similar questions, both within and beyond the WordPress community, but I did not come across one solid, definitive answer to the problem. …A couple of multi-language plugins, and the like, but nothing that was really “on point” to your needs. Curious.

    Best wishes.

    Cj.
