• I’m going to attempt an upgrade, but to make it a little bit easier for me, which files are typically “modified” files as in the instructions? (It says to save the files I’ve modified). I really don’t know which ones I’ve modified, but I have a lot of posts, categories, and links that I really don’t want to lose so I’m being overly cautious.

  • posts categories and links are stored in the database, not in files.

Files you have modified are wp-config.php and any theme files you have edited, typically.

Thanks! How about the index.php files? Should I use the ones from the newest version?

    which index.php files?

There is a main index.php in the root of your WordPress install, and there are index.php files that come with all themes. Which one are you referring to? If its the latter, didnt I just answer that question??

what version of wordpress are you currently using? and out of curiousity what version are you upgrading to?

Well, I procrastinated and am still on 2.05, and I’m trying to upgrade to 2.1 (I’ll get 2.2 eventually). I wasn’t sure if I could upgrade from 2.05 to 2.2 without first going to 2.1?

I probably make things more difficult than they should be.

I’ve only used the basic theme, and haven’t really modified it that I know of, except maybe colors in the header.

I suppose I mean the main index.php file in the root.

do things the easy way, go download 2.0.10 from here..

    http://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/

dont use the RC ones use the plain old 2.0.10

that will cause you the least pain right now.

Youre a tad behind and the important thing is to take care of the security issues your site is currently open to.

ALL of the files in your wordpress root should be deleted before you upload the new files EXCEPT FOR

    wp-config.php

    Leave your wp-content/themes directory alone.

As long as you dont switch up to 2.1.x you wont need to worry about major theme changes.

Delete everything inside wp-includes/ and wp-admin/ before you upload the new files.

Disable ALL of your plugins before upgrading.

ive been askimeted — I sent you a quick email via the contact form on your site, pandrews. I hope you get it in time 😛
