I was getting ready to install WordPress then I read the requirements and noticed that mod_rewrite was required. I have to ask, why? What features to work, need this?

If I don't have mod_rewrite installed will WordPress still work, what features won't?

    Thank you

it works fine without it. u wont have the funky URIs from what i know about wordpress. you might still be able to use the index.php/bla/bla urls :)

I don't know what you mean by the funky URLs, can you give / show me an example?

    Thanks

Without "funky" URL your 4th post might have this address:
    http://www.example.com/blog/index.php?p=4
while using the "nice" permalinks it would show up like
    http://www.example.com/blog/post_title
Same for the categories, but I think you got the idea.

Using_Permalinks should help explain some more.
