I did not like the about page I wrote, when I deleted it I also deleted the link that brings up the page. I am new at this and do not have a clue. I reloaded the theme, but that did not help.

Typically, you should be able to just add a new Page called About.
Note: most themes use the template tag, wp_list_pages(), to display a 'menu' of pages in the header.
