I have a problem with a WP installation. It’s fine on my machines but I’m installing it for a friend and when he attempts to use the site’s dashboard the edit menu/bar (ie the text formatting icons)is missing in both visual and HTML modes. The rest of the dashboard is fine.

The site uses V2.7, and the problem on my friend’s machine (which runs XP) isn’t browser dependent: it occurs in Firefox, Chrome and MS IE. His machines run Windows XP. No plugins are installed at the site and I have updated his Flash installation.

When I load my wordpress.com account on my friend’s machine and open a blog the menu bars are present and correct, which suggests this isn’t a security problem.

Am beginning to tear out my hair and can’t afford to lose any more so any help with this would be very much appreciated.

I’ve tried all the recommendations in the troubleshooting guide linked to above and have also checked that Java is up to date but the text editing buttons in tinymce are still missing in MS Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

I am having this same problem.

Where do I find this in 2.7?

Make sure the “Disable the visual editor when writing” checkbox in your profile is not selected.

    from the link posted above.

Getting a bit desperate here. Have tried everything listed on http://azaozz.wordpress.com/2008/12/11/troubleshooting-tinymce-in-wordpress-27/

plus ensuring that Java, Browsers etc. are up to date.

    Any more ideas, anyone?

Tried turning off firewall and anti-virus completely?

Is there a router with a firewall involved? If so can you circumvent that?

Many thanks Michael – the ISP eventually discovered that Javascript was being blocked as a result of the proxy settings on what they called the ‘web blocker’ (I assume they were referring to the firewall) and when they removed the block the menu started working properly. Took them a while to do this – we’d asked them to look at the firewall last week.

Odd that that sites hosted at wordpress.com were fine – tinymce worked correctly – throughout on the system in question though. For some reason they obviously weren’t affected by the block.

I have the same problem in version 2.7. In my case I have two domains hosted at one.com. At domain A the format bar is working correctly, at domain B it is missing.

I have tried the checklist above, but this din’t solve my problem. I have uploadet all the content from the same local folder at the harddrive. Both uploads are complete installs and not upgrades. I’m using the same webrowser in both cases. Both IE an Opera gives the same result.

Okay: At the upper right corner in the bar above there is one button named show/hide Kitchen sink. This should be added to the checklist. Press this button and the lower bar appears.
