• On my WordPress 2.3 installation, I had the ability to enter a new category right on the “Write Post” page. Since upgrading to 2.3.1, this feature seems to have gone missing. See, for example, this picture.

This problem manifests on all combination of browsers and operating systems and did not manifest on any combination before the upgrade.

How do I restore this feature?

Bump. Can’t find this in the search, either. Please help.

Once again, if my previous message wasn’t clear – it used to be that you could add a category while you were writing a post in 2.3; now you can’t in 2.3.1. Is this a design change or has something got borked?

No change – it should be there.

Okay, then assuming it’s borked and looking like this, any tricks for restoring it to its former glory?

Something wrong with your browser would be my guess. Clear the browser cache’s and such. Make sure javascript is enabled. Check for javascript errors in the error console. Make sure all the WordPress *.js files are on the site and are accessible (correct permissions).

No, there’s nothing wrong with the browser. It happens on all four of my machines, using a combination of browsers that includes Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Konquerer. This is a problem in the coding side of things and it’s not apparently fixed by re-uploading the file.

Any settings that control the presence of that box?

No, none. The box is produced by Javascript code though, so if that’s not working for any reason, then there’s your problem.

Since you say it’s not on multiple browsers, then my advice would be to make sure that you have the permissions right on the server’s files and that the JS files are downloadable by the browsers.

Hmm, interesting, because I now have set up a development version of the system and find that as long as it’s pointing to a new, “clean” database, there are no issues. When I point it to the old database, then the categories add disappears.

Hmmm… Are you logged in as the Administrator, or as some other user? That box won’t appear unless the Role of your user has the “manage_categories” Capability. That’s not so much a “setting”, and it’s not new, so I don’t know why the Administrator would not have it. But other users, like a “Contributor” and such would not have it.

I’m logged in as admin/user 1 on both. I’ll check to see if I’ve “lost” the ability to manage categories, but given that I can add them from the Manage > Categories tab, I think not…

The javascript that adds that box is /wp-admin/js/cat.js. Is that file correct? Compare it with one from a fresh download, make sure it’s the right size and such. Make sure that you can pull up the file in a web browser from your site and get it correctly.

Is your host running any weird extensions like mod_security?

I’m sorry, but if these don’t work, there’s probably nothing more we can tell you. I’ve gone over everything. It works for me, that’s about the best I can say. I can’t reproduce your problem.
