• Hi,

I have a WordPress that is an old version 3.0.4 and needs a new SQL database version to update the WordPress to the current version.

    Couple questions.

What is in the SQL Database? I’m thinking it’s just backend data that links to the files in the WordPress directory.

I made a tarball of the old site, tried exporting it to the new site, then changing the wp-config.php to contain the new SQL database name and password, but that didn’t work.

I know from previous experience that when you create a WordPress site, you need to make a SQL database to link up to it.

I’m using GoDaddy for hosting, which is confusing at first. I tried using a plugin to backup the website, but it wouldn’t work to restore the website.

What should I do? I’m sorta confused at this point, since I first created a new site to replace the old site as a test, but can’t seem to figure it out. Any help would be widely appreciated.

I think I figured it out. So easy once you get it, rofl.

So to answer my own questions,

The SQL database contains comments, plugin settings and a whole lot more.

WordPress is flexible with upgrading it, as long as you backup the SQL database and all the files via FTP.

The GoDaddy webhosting isn’t that difficult to use now. The sections that are of interest are Webhosting, then SQL Databases and also you need to setup an FTP account, which the IP address of your server is located at the bottom of the webhosting section of GoDaddy.

Just for future reference…you really should always run the latest stable release of WordPress. The only exceptions may be compatibility reasons with themes or plugins. The minimum requirements for a web host are not unreasonable so you should not have a problem with most reputable hosting companies.

To answer your question about the database…it pretty much contains EVERYTHING 🙂

Yah well it isn’t my website and I’m helping someone out. I know to always update them.
