   Are there any plugins available to allow the creation of subdomains using the htaccess root file to allow for 'microsites' with different templates associated to the subdomain?

   That approach might be a bit of a security risk, but you can use page templates to do this without extra plug ins! This will get you started:

   If I'm not mistaken.....isn't that what WPMU does?

   As far as I understand, WPMU creates new domains that are independent of the the initial one?
