Media Library suddenly missing tons of images (14 posts)

I don't know how it happened. All I know is that one day everything was exactly as it should be, and the next day, almost all my media files are missing. Nothing was changed, no imports, updates, or anything before the problem happened. It just seemed to do it on it's own overnight. The images are all still in the posts thankfully, but the image preview for each post summery no longer works for most of them. What could have caused this and how can i fix it?

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Ok, just tried that, the plugins don't seem to be causing the problem. I'll try switching the theme and see if that's it. I use an advanced theme that I paid for called prophoto and contacted them already, but they didn't find a problem.

Ok, deactivated the theme, that didn't work either. Any other ideas? Should I try deleting my inactive plugins?

That might help. Also try installing the Hotfix plugin:

ok, tried hotfix, but that didn't work either. Thought I should add, the "gallery" button is also missing from those posts who's images no longer show up in the media library.

Try re-uploading all files & folders - except the wp-content folder - from a fresh download of WordPress.

Also check your uploads path in Settings -> Media. It's usually blank.

i deleted all the plugins i tried like hotfix and thumbnail builder and everything else that's been suggested to me (i've posted this problem in another forum too) and I also put the theme back. I did it all at once so i don't know what caused it. It was probably one of the themes or one of the plugins.

Try deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

I've done that already, that was like the first thing I did. Plugins are not causing my missing media files. I think it's a corrupted database, and unless there is any known way for me to fix it myself, i'll just have to manually make the repairs.

I had a same problem just now, with missing media library images for my blog. The images appeared to be right there in the media library and were definitely on the actual web server (checked via FTP).

I checked the follow: Settings → Media and make sure that Uploading Files folder is set to wp-content/uploads"

Mine were set to the default blank (which defaults to content/uploads). I altered this to an absolute path http://www.tonyblackwood.com/wp-content/uploads/

THIS DIDNT SOLVE THE PROBLEM when I refreshed the site in browser. However, I immediately changed the path back to blank (the default setting again) and everything came back! Woop!

Everyone having this problem might want to try this before getting into the more technical fixes!
