Media Library Image Attachments (7 posts)

I've been playing with RC5. When I upload different cropped sizes of the same image, I am allowed to attach all of them to a particular post. What I am NOT allowed to do (unless I'm missing something) is to choose which sizes go in the thumbnail, gallery, and/or slider.

If I don't add a Feature Image to an individual Post, the largest size goes into the Slider. WordPress then automatically squeezes that image into the Gallery Image and Regular Thumbnail.

If I add a cropped Featured Image, whichever size I choose then goes everywhere including the Slider (which it doesn't fit). So whatever size I choose ends up being a compromise in the other locations.

The Media Library/Crop Image menu offers the option to crop a Master image for Thumbnail option only.....BUT for me......it doesn't work......it crops everywhere. I tried this several times with only two plugins installed (WordPress Beta Tester, and Maintenance Mode Plugin - All other plugins were disabled).

In a nutshell: Can the 3.5 Media Library/Crop Image menu be improved so that 2-4 cropped versions of a Master Image can be attached to each Individual Post, Slider, Gallery, or Thumbnail as the Admin User sees fit. Right now, it seems to be an All-or-Nothing choice.

  2. What plugin are you using for this? Slider's not built in.

    Ipstenu,
    Thanks for the response.

I'm using Justin Tadlock's "Unique" Theme, which uses "Flexslider" script I think. In other words, I don't think it's a plugin as such.

If you click on my gravatar name, you can go to my site and see what I'm trying to accomplish:

    1. Slider at the top (image too small - needs to be 400px x 600px).
    2. Gallery thumbnail at bottom right of page gets squished on gallery page (if full size - 400px x 600px).
    3. Thumbnails on Gallery Archive page (I've cropped all of those to 240px x 240px).

Right now (unless I'm doing something wrong) the only option I have is to choose Full Image Size, or Thumbnail Size, with nothing in between.
I'd like to have at least one Midsize Image in my Media Library also, with the option to place each size where I want them.

  4. A theme function is a plugin by another name. But in this case, I think you're doing something odd with the slider, since I have no issues with FlexSlider on other sites. Have you asked Justin?

    Ipstenu,

That's my next step, BUT, I didn't want to appear stupid in front of Justin (he's way beyond me in WordPress skills).

I started this forum post hoping that it would prod Core Developers to improve the Media Library further, by enabling the Admin user to be able to pick & choose where to place different cropped sizes of the same image attached to an individual Post.

Maybe that's available now, and I just don't understand how to do it. I was hoping it could be made part of the Core, regardless of the Theme used. I think it kind of falls into place with Mobile Responsive design seeing how efforts have already been made to govern what sizes of an image are offered to mobile devices on the Download. This would be the reverse, by categorizing an individual image by size, on the Upload.

Maybe it has already been done, and I don't know how to implement it.

  6. Aw Justin's totally cool ;)

The catch 22 here is that we can't debug what were not using, so ... we can't tell from afar. Never worry about showing your lack of knowledge to anyone! We aren't born knowing everything, and all the devs here, including Justin, know that :)

Out of the box, you can do that. I can add the same image, however many times I want, and each time pick the size. Which effectively does what you described. What you seem to want, however, is a theme specific change. You have a tool (plugin, theme, whatever) that has it's own behavior, and you really have to ask the guy who wrote it how to use it most of the time. With the commonly used plugins and themes, you can find a lot of people who use it and can help, but not so much the smaller ones.

(Also Justin makes a living off support, so we always send people back to the pay-for-support resources when they're the official home. It's only fair :D )

    So this is Theme Specific.

    Thank You, Ipstenu!
