After activating the plugin Version: 1.6.5.4, all of the existing images (.jpg) in the media gallery are gone, just the file name appears.

The links to the images are still intact in the wp-content folder.

(I did not do a “bulk smush it”, I simply activated the plugin. After deactivating it, the image thumbnails are still not showing.

I found something about resetting the file permissions to default but I don’t know how to do this.

  • Hi @localjet,

Thanks for posting! Sorry you’ve had some trouble with that.

To be sure I understand, are ALL of the images from your media library gone?

If so, if you deactivate the plugin, do they then show up?

Looking forward to getting this sorted for you. πŸ™‚

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

No as I stated, I deactivated the plugin and the image thumbnails are still missing.

    Thanks.

    Hi @localjet,

Thanks for confirming that. It sounds like something changed recently that caused the images not to be available now.

Has anything changed with your uploads settings at Settings > Media? Is the uploads path correct?

There’s a lot of additional troubleshooting steps mentioned in the following topic as well.
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/images-not-showing-up-in-media-library-2?replies=12

Perhaps you could also try deactivating all your plugins and switching to a default theme like Twenty Fourteen and see if the images show up again?

If so, then its due to a theme or plugin issue. If not, it would be something prior.

If you have questions on any of this, I’ll be happy to help. πŸ™‚

    Cheers,
    David

    Hi David,

To clarify, the images are still there, but the thumbnails have disappeared in the media gallery.

    Here is the path:

    http://mywebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/image-Small.jpg
    http://mywebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Galveston-with-Diamond-Lattice-B.jpg

I checked via ftp and can see the image files listed.

I’m using Genesis/Studio press for the theme.

Twenty fourteen theme activated – media file images still missing

Plugins: every plugin disabled – media file images still missing

The only thing I changed was to install and activate wpsmushit.

There are two images still showing. Next to each image it says, “not processed, Smush it now?”

So all of the images that were compressed by the plugin are missing thumbnails.

Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, Lisa

    Hi @localjet,

Thanks for clarifying all that. So to be sure I understand correctly, it’s only the images compressed by the plugin that are missing thumbnails, correct?

Other images in the library have the thumbnails and look as they should?

The thumbnail images that “should” show there, you should be able to right-click on them and get the url they’re linking to.

Could you provide the path that they link to here?

And similarly, could you provide the path to another image that does have a thumbnail?

You can just post the path here, everything after your domain name, if you’re concerned about linking to your site.

With that path though, we’ll be able to see where the difference lies with those compressed images.

Just to check too, are you able to add new media to your library without any problems? Meaning the thumbnail shows just fine with that?

    Thanks,
    David

Yes, the images that were compressed are missing.

In the media gallery, here are the paths when I right click and select “copy image URL”.

This is a new image I just uploaded, the thumbnail IS showing:

    http://mysite.com.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Backstop-small-150×150.jpg

This is an existing image thumbnail is NOT showing:

    http://mysite.com/wp-includes/images/crystal/default.png

I wonder why the image path changed in the media gallery after installing the plugin? The pictures still show on the website pages, just not in the media gallery.

    Thanks, Lisa

    Hi @localjet,

Thanks for those extra details. The plugin itself wouldn’t alter the upload path. It sounds like something else is doing that.

Could you try deactivating other plugins to see if that fixes those urls?

If that doesn’t sort it, could you check your wp-config.php file to see if there’s a define statement there like the following?
    define('UPLOADS', 'wp-content/myimages');

Hopefully one of those will provide a clue as to what’s occurring, if not altogether sort it.

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

I deactivated the plugins again, nothing changes. The only one I didn’t deactivate, is ManageWP.

I’ve looked at the wp-config.php file file, but I don’t see that command to define(‘UPLOADS…)

It’s very strange that after I activated the plugin the images weren’t visible in the media gallery. But a new uploaded image is visible.

If the path has changed, why does an image I just uploaded display thumbnail?

Is there anything else I can check?

    Thanks, Lisa

    Hi @localjet,

Thanks for those extra details. Could I just verify the following with you?

Normally, uploads on your site are going here:
    /wp-includes/images/

The plugin is using the following path for uploads:
    /wp-content/uploads/

    Is that correct?

If so, could I ask how your uploads are normally going to /wp-includes/images/ rather than the standard /wp-content/uploads/ folder?

    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,

Just to clarify again, the actual File URL Links are:

    http://website.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Cedar-W.jpg

    http://website.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Style-202-J.jpg

The “copy image” URL when I right click is:

    http://website.com/wp-includes/images/crystal/default.png

So the files are in the right place, but the image thumbnails disappeared after I installed wpsmushit.

On the website, the images are still there, but the thumbnails are showing that “crystal/default.png” which is just a gray image. Does that make sense?

    I just found this thread:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/all-images-missing-in-wp-media-library-1

I checked and the permissions are currently set to 755. Do they need to be changed and if so, how do I do that in bulk?

    Thanks.

    Thread Starter localjet

    (@localjet)

Also, the index.php permissions are set to 644, but the image permissions are set to 755.

Not sure if that is significant or not.

    Hi @localjet,

Sorry for the delay here. I’ve been looking into this and I’m just stumped as to how your media library images turned up missing.

I also misunderstood you earlier, the url you’re seeing for the missing thumbnails is a placeholder:
    /wp-includes/images/crystal/default.png

I can’t all replicate this. It seems to me like something went wrong with the thumbnail images being regenerated, though I’m not sure.

Could you possibly try using the following to regenerate those thumbnail images?
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

WP Smush.it uses similar code but I’m just wondering if maybe using that might sort it.

    Thanks,
    David

    (@localjet)

    Hi,

I installed the regenerate thumbnails plugin and tried it on a couple of images.

It could not regenerate them. Error message: “Pink-Rose” (ID 72) failed to resize. The originally uploaded image file cannot be found at….

So if I edit the image thumbnail, the file URL takes me to the actual image. But if I click to open the attachment, the image is gone.

I don’t know how the file path could have changed.

I uninstalled the wp smushit plugin but the image thumbnails are still missing.

    Hi @localjet,

Thanks for looking into that. Could you possibly provide a link to one of the images that isn’t working and one that is working?

That’ll help us get a better idea for the url structure and possibly spot the issue.

    Thanks,
    David
