• There was a similar topic to this before but I can see only one post which does not answer the question.

Is there a maximum number of categories? 300+ would very useful for me.

  • 300+? That’s rather a lot, it should be find as far as I can guess of course you can also use child categories in addition to parent categories, so that may knock it down a few notches should you want to group your cats.

Your archive page is going to pretty big

I did not think of the archive pages, but that should be OK. If anyone knows of any other potential problems please tell me now rather than find out the hard way!

What I want to do is use WP as a CMS because the largest and most frequently updated part of the site should work well as a blog . That section currently consists of regularly updated pages, the idea is to replace this with a category so that contains posts. One (desirable) consequence that older stuff remains available after updating but the newest stuff appears first. So the page currently at:

    mysite.com/yyy/xxx.html

will be replaced by a category at

    mysite.com/yyy/xxx/

Thats just one of the problems of course……

My concern is also almost same.
I am facing same type of problem.. My blog is showing me the feeds till about 130 categories. and its not calling the feeds after that.

So is there any limitation for categories in a blog.

    Thanks in advance

I am trying to use WordPress as CMS, and the structure of the data leads itself to many categories over time. right
now there are about 350 total categoriees, about 3-4 levels deep.
Each post would belong to 4-5 categories atmost.
What is the max. number of categoires WP2.0+ allows? Is there a performance overhead with so many categories?

could some wordpress experts throw some light on this yet unresolved issue, please? thanks in advance.

I’d love to hear some expert opinion on this too. I was considering using tags instead of categories, however I have read some posts suggesting that the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin will not be forward compatible with future versions of wordpress. Additionally, to navigate to specific tag pages (that have a union of tag 1 and tag 2) requires a url such as:

    http://mydomain.com/index.php?tag=tag1+tag2

I don’t think this url would be particularly search engine friendly. So, these two factors (the lack of forward compatibility and the inability to navigate to seo url’s kind of scared me off using tags as a potential solution.

So I’m back to seeing what wordpress can do out of the box.

I’d love to find out how many categories I can create and fill with posts before wordpress will break or have its performance seriously impaired. I know some people will be saying to themselves something like why would anyone in their right mind want to have so many categories? But I do. I just do!

Anyone with this knowledge, please help. Would 1,000 categories break wordpress?
