[resolved] Massive Backups (Old Backup Location Not Being Excluded) (11 posts)

A number of people are reporting issues (massive backups, backups hanging, etc), and I think the root of all of these problems may be that BackUpWordPress is no longer excluding the backup directory from backups.

I've seen two causes for this:

In most of the cases, the backup directory is simply no longer being automatically excluded from backups, and without that exclusion all of the old backups are being included with each new backup.

But in one case the problem was that the default location where backups were being stored inexplicably changed from:

    wp-content/backupwordpress-xxxxxxxxxx-backups

    …to:

    wp-content/uploads/backupwordpress-yyyyyyyyyy-backups

…and since there was no exclusion for the old backup directory, all of the old backups were being included with each new backup.

In all of these cases, manually adding an exclusion for the backup directory (new and/or old) has solved the problem.

Is your site hosted by Hostgator?

No, Paul, most of these sites are hosted on MediaTemple, but I've even seen the behavior (where it forgets to exclude its own backup directory) on at least one of the test/development sites I'm hosting on my own local workstation (Mac OS X, Apache/2.2.22, PHP/5.3.15).

    Hi,
I'm using this on a Hostgator account and I noticed it is not excluding backups, and when I click the download button, it takes me to a 404 not found page. I looked in the wp_options.php and the entries you mention are not there.

    Thanks,
    Evelyn

I have had this same issue and I'm on hostgator and another host with vps. I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling.

For me, I think the problem is developing site locally and then uploading to a live server. Also, because I zipped the files myself, the old backups were there.

I was experiencing all of the above after the latest updates. There were more than one backups folder created by the plugin. Two under wp-content and one under wp-content/uploads. Only one of these was working, and it was not the old one where I had previous backups. That's why the backups table on the Tools page was showing as empty-- at first I thought my backups were deleted.

    Uninstalling/reinstalling seems to fix everything.

No need, I installed the plugin from scratch and it is working fine now except for this other issue here. Thanks for the help!
