   Hi,

   currently when you click on an image in a post on my site it least through to a blank page with just that image on it.

   I know that you can deactivate this by setting image link to "none" in the post settings but I'd rather not have to do this for thousands of posts.

   Is there any code edit / plugin anyone knows that I can use to get the desired effect without a huge amount of manual updating?

   No, because that's actually put into the content of your post. If you looked at it in the HTML editor, you'd see <a href="http://domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/foobar.jpg"><img src="http://domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/foobar.jpg" /></a>
