Many bugs, probably caused by a bad theme- help please! (5 posts)

    Hi,
I'm posting this a bit out of desperation. As someone who is fairly non-techie I often find the forums a bit above my head, but here goes...

Since switching my blog over from Typepad to WordPress about a month and a half ago, I have been having constant issues. It was working well for about a week or two, until I made the fatal mistake of upgrading to version 2.5.

Suddenly, I was having problems with links, and uploading and inserting images, and using different browsers, etc. It was really hampering my ability to blog, so I hired a tech company to try to fix it. They charged me for a fix that never worked and then ignored my emails. So I found a webmaster to help, and we discussed having her downgrade my WP back to 2.3.2, the last stable version I had. Seemed like a great idea...

Except it wasn't. All hell broke lose. Here are a few of the bugs I'm experiencing:
    1) Cannot upload/insert images in Firefox (only works in Safari).
    2) Lose all of my paragraph formatting every time I try to edit in Safari (works only in Firefox).
    3) Cannot check my stats at all (stat counter, google analytics, feed burner- none will work anymore, though they used to)
    4) Cannot add new text widgets to my sidebars without everything going wonky on me, other widgets disappearing, etc.
And a few other more minor issues.

The webmaster says my theme is really buggy and she doesn't usually see so many strange issues like what I'm having. I don't really want to start over with trying to find a new theme and tweaking all of the design all over again.

Basically, after a month of these issues, I'm about to just go back to my old Typepad blog (sad, I know), but I just don't know how to fix these things. I can't afford to pay anyone else, and I don't have the time or know-how to do it myself.

    Any thoughts? I appreciate it,
    Stephanie

First it seems your choices in help have both been bad.

You could easily switch to the default theme and see if many of your issues go away. If so, you know it is the theme. You can also go to the themes site and see if it is compatable with 2.5.1.

Some of the issues you mention have been discussed here. Widgets, image uploading. You need to use the search funtion to assist you in finding actions.

But, if you don't have time and need others to do it for you, going back to a familiar program may be your only quick solution. I can say that once you have a working theme and can install upgrades correctly, WordPress will work for you. It works for many!

Your stat codes are missing, you need to add them back to your template.

Is your theme widget-ready? Not every theme is.

Thanks, kmessinger, I agree the help choices have not worked out well!

I tried switching to the default, and the issues didn't go away. So somehow, these problems have become more pervasive, and I almost wonder if I wouldn't need to start completely from scratch?

I know that I could search around for help with each individual issue, but I'm thinking this is a bigger issue than just each problem, and I'm not sure I'm competent to solve them all anyways (or maybe just lack the time and energy to do it all).

I know that WP is a great system- I've seen many use it well and I personally love so many aspects of it I would be sad to leave it behind! I was hoping it would go much smoother than this, once I got past the initial set up stage.

iridiax, the stat codes keep disappearing. I add them back in and save them, and then they're gone again. They just won't stick, for whatever reason.

And my theme is widget ready. It allows me to use some widgets, but it's as though something gets messed up or overloaded if I try to use too many.

Looks like the roll-back to 2.3.3 was successful.

You do have some html errors that you can check here http://validator.w3.org/ Many errors are cascading so if you fix one several will go away. You don't have to fix them all at once either.

You can use this plug-in for stats http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/stats/ if the others continue to fail.

I can see why you don't have a lot of time for code and errors but you have a nice blog. Hang in there!
