    Hi there, this post:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/425814?replies=5

Has evolved so I wanted to re-post with a more relevant title.

Daaa! This is driving me nutts!

In the network options, just before you install the network to receive your new config and htaccess details there is a suggestion that you change your site address from http://www.x.com to x.com. It gives you the example that your subdomain sites will end up like site1.www.x.com etc if you do not.

I want to use http://www.site1.x.com etc, so I took up their suggestion.

Installation went well, however my master site now appears as x.com instead of http://www.x.com... first bummer.

Now I find that I cannot create the sites I want to. When attempting to create a new site using "www.site1" in the entry form field I get an error message saying that it is an invalid address, presumably because of the period.

Anyone know what my options are? If I find out I'll update the post but it would be great to get the info from anyone that has run into this prob already.

Ideally I'd like my root site to be http://www.x.com and my subdomains to be http://www.site1.x.com and http://www.site2.x.com and so on.

    Thanks :)

there is a suggestion that you change your site address from http://www.x.com to x.com.

Take that advice before you dig this hole any deeper. This has always been pretty fundamental to WPMU, and it would be asking for trouble to head off in a different direction because too much is built on it.

Thanks gilmour :) I did in fact take up their suggestion and change this before I proceeded with the installation, I am sorry if this was not clear in my post.

With that in mind do you have anything further to add?

    Thanks

    Just to update:

I can create site1.x.com, site2.x.com ... to my hearts content, and I understand that adding the www. to the address was always a common problem normally resolved by visiting the general options and updating your site and blog url's. Problem is that this options seems to have been removed when working with multisites.

Does anyone have a theoretical fix for this? Would I need to do redirects or is there a quick config fix I could use, or is this all wishful thinking!?

    Thanks :)

    S

I have the same problem, but found a way around the problem:

You can create the site wwwsite1.x.com (without ".") and then edit the site name after to be http://www.site1.x.com

Ok! Now we are cooking!! Thanks Mellegaard :)

Here is what I did, I created the new site as suggested above.

    wwwsite1.x.com

Navigating to Super Admin -> Sites then hovering over your new site in the list will bring up a number of options, click on the "edit" option.

On the page that follows just change all of the entries for:

    wwwsite1.x.com to: http://www.site1.x.com

Working so far, will update if I run into any problems.

    Many Thanks
    S

Sorry, for some reason http:// was added to the entry above, just edit those entries to include the period.
