I need to have simple access to the category ID number for each category and the logical location to find it (in manage categories) does not display it.
I DO NOT want to be logging through to phpMySQL or SQL Admin several times a day
Why does this no longer show in WP admin as default?

Yes, I agree... this is EXTREMELY aggravating.
What you can do now is simply hover your mouse over the name of the category in the manage screen and you will see the cat # in the URL in your browser...
I wish WP at least still showed this, since the cat # is important for some plugins and markup code.

I also wish there was a simple system to switch the admin side category list sort between numerical by category ID and alphabetical by category name (not to mention a 1-page view of the list that could be printed off).

Well I had hoped it would revert to showing the category numbers in manage categories under 2.6.1 or 2.6.2 .... but nope, obviously the devs know the work arounds so they don't see the problems faced by non-propeller-heads

I am hoping so too... many plugins rely on placement of the category ID number -- not the category name. It just makes life easier to have these there and avoids unnecessary confusion.
