Making new posts show up on a page that is NOT the main page? (2 posts)

I'm new to wordpress and still tinkering. I've found the area in the settings tab on the wp-admin page that talks about the main page displaying a static page, and new posts being on a different page. I'm trying to figure out how to make this work. I have added 4 pages to my site, and the wp-generated main page is not in the dropdown for me to select ...

I've tried creating a page called 'home' and putting the static info there, but then the page links across the top of the screen show two 'home' tabs - one is the wp-generated page, the other is the one I created. The benefit to the one I created is that I could set it to be static, and thus set the 'notes' page to be the one that displays new posts. So, I suppose if one of the two 'home' pages must go, it should be the wp-generated one.

So ... how does one go about doing that? Or are there reasons that doing so is a bad idea?

It depends on your theme, but here is a link that might help.

Or, if you are using WP 2.9, see this link.
