Make the site live from sub directory

I have a site ready to go, but its sitting in a subdirectory. In the root folder i have my current html site. How do i get the new wordpress site to take over? I thought it would be as easy as changing the url settings in the settings menu but obviously not. Once i remove the old html files from the root what needs to go in the root? if anything? Thanks
