I'm planning to upgrade from WP 265 to 284.
In case somethings goes wrong, does it have any sense to go via WP 27 and test the site there before moving on?
Thanks,
Kjetil

A staged upgrade is often a little safer than a large jump. Just make sure you deactivate all plugins first. You might also want to switch to the default them whilst carrying out the upgrade. There's a slight chance that your current theme may not work properly (or even cause Admin) problems in 2.8.
Backing up your database before and after the first upgrade step is also strongly recommended.

I'm planning to change themes (I'm using three WP installs) as well.
By the way, for database backups, both wp-DBmanager and WP-phpmyadmin are absolutely recommended. The latter was supposed to work just up to WP 2.2, but apart from some cosmetic styling (css) glitches it works perfectly at least up to 2.7.1.

I prefer DBC Backup myself.
Compatible up to 2.5.1 it says (here) - and apparently won't work on 2.8.
(By the way, even wp-phpmyadmin works even with WP 284, even if it claims to stop above 2.2.2)
