MailChimp extension use with free downloads

I’d like to offer free content for download on my site, by setting the price to 0.00. I’d also like to pop up a MailChimp signup form before the user can download (using the MailChimp extension). Is this possible? If yes, what is the user experience if the user already is signed up for my email list via MailChimp?
