Support » Localhost Installs » Mac mini server (testing only) imac for development INSTALLATION HELP?

  • Hi, I have heard great things about WordPress, so here I am to learn more and hopefully try it out… I want to build a website based on electrical automation information, like a web library resource with docs, calculators and hopefully a forum or the ability to make comments and give feedback… The site will be content rich with hundreds of documents from my own personal library and also from industry experts… my setup environment is as the topic shows… I have a host which is one.com and they have the server prerequisites for running a WordPress site… Does anyone want to help a virgin? Thanks in advance…

  • Hmm, I’m not sure where all the details you gave come into play, but if you’re just looking to setup a development server on a Mac, the easiest way is to use something like MAMP (http://www.mamp.info/en/index.html). The free version will work just fine.

This will give you all the WordPress requirements (Apache, MySQL & PHP) just as your hosting account does, and all you need to do is install download and install WordPress.

    See detailed instructions here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP

Thanks George, So if I have understood the situation right, then I have two choices. (1) Use wordpress with a connection to the live host and use it to test and develop. (2) Use wordpress with a connection to a local environment (server) such as my mac mini. I say mac mini, because I don’t want to screw with the settings on my imac, so i will make it my server and then simulate ftp etc…

I must say that one can get really confused after reading some of the forums in here. But if I understand it correctly, then all I need is an active server, before I install wordpress, becuase it is going to ask me for the settings of the server.

I have read other forums, where they wish to use a standard mac server setup, but then they will need to install things and screw with settings on the wordpress side to get it to work, so i will choose the path of least resistance… hopefully…
