3.x is a solid and useful program. I use it on my site extensively. My page formats are built around it-250 of them.

The lack of backward compatibility in 4.x is a deal-breaker for me. I updated, saw what it did to my site, and thanked my lucky stars I was backed up.

Changing each of those 250 pages would be quite the job.

I won’t stop using the 3.x version of the plugin–it’s still fabulous. However, lack of backward compatibility was a serious mistake. In effect, this isn’t an update. It’s a whole new program.

    I know, I know,… it’s FREE… you WARNED people… you worked HARD…

The new version is probably great. I’d even recommend it to people installing it for the first time. However, you’ve definitely alienated your established fan-base, and if I were a new user, I’d be worried that down the road the same thing will happen again.
