• I am at a loss. I can find no hacks or injections or anything, yet I have dropped completely off of google’s radar – used to be on page 4 for my best key terms and now i am gone, i mean GONE.

    My Webmaster tools reveal the problem, but I cannot figure out how this is happening – under “What Googlebot Sees” it lists spamlike key words: ringtones, prescription drug names, etc.

    I have searched the database and all of my theme files, and can find no culprit.

    Can someone help?

    Thanks in advance!

  • You have been hacked. You’ll need to clean up the hack and then “Request reconsideration” in Google Webmaster Tools after everything is fixed to get your site back in the index.

    How do I clean up something I can’t find? I searched all of the posts you suggested, and nothing fits…

    Besides in your theme files or database, the hack could be in your other WordPress files/directories, outside of your WordPress directory, or on your host’s server. Hacking code can be encrypted, so the spam words may not be visible when you look at the nasty code.

    i ran the wordpress exploit scanner and it found a file in my google sitemap generator plugin directory called screenshot-1.bak that is pretty ugly when i open it in a text editor

    it starts like this:

    <?php /*?#?#,,sess,GFjdD0i

    then is followed by much ugliness

    do you think this could be the culprit?

    I don’t know. I think that it’s a backup file, but I don’t know if this plugin uses one or if one of these can be evil.

    well, a backup file of a screenshot gif file that contains a php script with over 300 lines of encrypted code makes me think evil…
