• For the second straight week, I have lost all my posts, my plugins are gone, and my theme reverted back to the original WP default. What’s really weird is that after this happened last week, I uploaded a second copy of my custom theme folder and renamed it “default”, overwriting the original default folder, so I don’t understand how the original default came back. Replacing the posts and uploading the plugins isn’t too much of a hassle, but I’m not going to bother with it until I know this won’t happen again. Since this involves my database, is it a hosting issue? I have other WP installs on this same domain with the same host and they all seem to be doing fine (knock on wood). What could be going on with this one particular WP install/database that’s causing it to do this?

  • Well that’s new, i never knew you could rename to over-write…

I don’t think you can rename a folder to a name that matches one that exists…

To over-write you’d have to upload the theme as Default, over-writing in the upload process…

Just renaming a folder to default while another exists with that name, will not work, or at least in all my experience…

If you’re stuff keeps getting lost it may be that your host has had server problems and has restored from backups…

Check with your webhost if there have been any problems.

Well, I actually deleted the “default” folder first, then uploaded my custom theme folder and renamed it default, so it was the only default folder in my themes. I guess your “restored from backups” scenario would make sense then, since that’s the only way I can think of that would make a deleted folder reappear. Everything was working for about one full week with the correct theme displaying and everything, and then this morning I checked and everything was gone. I’ve got a support ticket open with my host, so hopefully they’ll be able to explain what’s going on.

If the host has a hardware failure and they only backup every week for example that can happen. This is why if your data is important you should also do your own backups.

If they’re restoring backups without there being a failure of some kind i would expect any decent host to provide prior warning, so you can do your own backup where necessary.

I would think any decent host would also notify me when there has been a hardware failure, even if it means data was lost. At least then I would know what’s going on. Still no response from them on my support ticket. If it doesn’t get answered soon, they aren’t going to like the blog posts I write about them from my next host.

Well yes any decent host would, but i can only speculate on what your specific problems are…

It really depends if that is the case though, i could of course be wrong.

Be interested to hear the response from them though… 🙂

Dave, if you upgrade, the automatic process will overwrite your theme with the default theme in the package, so I don’t think you’ve chosen a wise path. As for the rest, are the posts still in the database and did you just ‘lose’ the wp-config file, or is somehow WP installed anew and do you have two (or more) sets of tables now? Does your host offer an automatic installation process that might have gone berzerk?
